How does Power Saver work? (back to top)

When you enroll in PNM Power Saver, we’ll connect a device to your exterior refrigerated air conditioning unit. On the hottest summer weekdays, June 1 through September 30, we’ll automatically coordinate participating refrigerated air conditioning units to help manage the demand for electricity. There is no charge for signing up and the installation is free.

What is a Power Saver device? (back to top)

The Power Saver device is connected to your exterior refrigerated air conditioning unit. It receives a signal from PNM to turn your refrigerated air conditioning unit’s compressor off for a few minutes each half-hour during the hottest summer weekday afternoons. This helps manage electricity demand during times of peak usage.

How often will the program be activated? (back to top)

PNM Power Saver typically operates on the hottest weekdays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., June 1 through September 30. The program is not activated on holidays or weekends. You can expect approximately 15-25 activation periods during the cooling season. An activation period will not last longer than 4 hours on any given day.

Will my comfort level be affected during activation? (back to top)

The refrigerated air conditioning unit's fan continues to circulate the cool air throughout your home. During this time, the temperature in your home may rise a few degrees, but most customers report they don't even notice.

Who is eligible to participate? (back to top)

Power Saver is available to PNM residential and business customers in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, Los Lunas, Belen, Bernalillo, Alamogordo, Deming and Silver City with refrigerated central air conditioning. The PNM Power Saver program requires that you have a refrigerated central air conditioning unit. Evaporative cooling units are not eligible for this program.

PNM Power Saver may be made available to additional New Mexico communities in the future. Please check back frequently for updated geographic eligibility.

Do I need to be home when the device is installed? (back to top)

The device will be installed near your exterior refrigerated air conditioning unit, so it is not necessary for you to be at home at the time. Just be sure your exterior refrigerated air conditioning unit and electrical fuse box are accessible to our technicians.

How does PNM Power Saver benefit my community? (back to top)

PNM customers use most of their electricity in the summer. As the area grows and more new and existing customers buy refrigerated air conditioning units, demand for electricity in the summer reaches higher and higher peaks. This puts a strain on the power system. By lowering energy use during hot weekday afternoons, PNM Power Saver provides a way for you to use energy wisely and have a positive impact on the environment.

How does the annual thank-you check and sign-up bonus work? (back to top)

Participants who sign up after October 1 will receive their first annual $25 thank-you check the following fall. Customers who sign up by December 31 will also receive a one-time sign-up bonus of $25.

Can I cancel? (back to top)

If you become dissatisfied, you can leave the PNM Power Saver program at no cost, upon request.
